Assess the health of you and your family members. Your health status will determine what level of premium and deductible is best for you and your family.  

Examine how you used last year’s benefits. This applies to benefits beyond just health care—if you’ve invested in benefits such as retirement, dental or flexible spending and didn’t use them, consider getting rid of them this upcoming year.  

Attend company meanings. Join meetings to learn about the benefits offered as well as any upcoming changes to plans.  

Utilize planning resources. Using plan selection and comparison tools can help you analyze your claims from the previous year to determine which plan is best for you this upcoming enrollment season.  

Verify that your doctor and hospital are in your network. If your doctor and hospital are outside of your network, you may want to consider changing your plan so that you don’t end up paying significantly more for their services.  

Patriciate in wellness programs. Wellness and management programs not only help you become healthier, but also allow you to receive potential discounts on your health benefits.  

Utilize tax-free benefits. Health saving accounts (HSAs), flexible spending accounts (FSAs) and dependent care spending accounts can all provide tax advantages such as tax-free reimbursements. These accounts may also be used to pay for prescriptions, deductibles, and health-related costs that your insurance may not cover.  

Check your retirement savings. If you’re not at a comfortable level of savings for your retirement, consider changing your retirement plan withholdings and utilizing your company match in your retirement account.
